About our program:

Summer art programs for youth ages 6–12 are taught by professional teaching artists. We keep our class sizes small so individual attention is given to all children, from beginner to advanced level. Young artists use design-thinking processes to explore a variety of media in drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media, and sculpture. All art materials are included in the camp fee.

All elementary camps frun Monday-Thursday, 9am-12pm, unless otherwise noted. For out-of-town participants, clay projects can be shipped once fired.

Week 1: Owls, Raptors and Birds of Prey

Back by popular demand! Fascinated by talons, wings, and birds of prey large and small? This week we’re inspired by these majestic creatures and are creating raptor sculptures, clay masks and exploring collagraph printmaking, watercolor, and cyanotypes (a unique form of photography).  We’ll also learn about the beautiful work of Kenojuak Ashevak, an Inuit artist.

Please note: clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and ready for pickup in 2-3 weeks.

Date: June 28-July 1 (Tue-Fri)

Time: 9am-12pm

Cost:  $145 includes all materials and kiln firings.

Week 2: Clay Camp: Inside Out

We’re taking inspiration from the great outdoors! Learn how to tell time with the sun and build a sun dial using slab construction and a few fun sculptural techniques. We’ll create bird and fairy houses, bug and butterfly garden markers, and sculpt a woodland creature out of clay. This special session may be taken for the full week or individual days.

Dates: July 5-8 (full session or daily, Tue-Fri)

Time: 9am-12pm

Cost: $160 or $45 daily (daily rate based on availability – please specify which day(s) in registration)

Includes all materials and kiln firings.

Week 3: Art of the Campout

Our favorite thing about summer is camping out and sleepovers at friends’ houses.  What could be better than a unique bag of goodies to make it truly memorable. We’ll build a personalized s’more roaster (out of clay),  fancy shadow puppets for late-night storytelling, a stargazer and a pocket-size flower press.  We’ll create all of these and much more during our week designed to create a fun tool kit for campouts.

Dates:  July 11-14

Times: 9am-12pm

Cost: $145 includes all materials and kiln firings.

Week 4: Clay Camp: Fantastically Functional

It’s clay all week at this summer camp and we’re making stuff we can USE every day! Try your hand at the pottery wheel, crank a slab roller to create your own tiles, ooze clay through the pug mill and see how a clay studio operates! Work with a professional potter and clay artist to learn the tips and tricks to building magnificent mirrors, sundae bowls, and treasure boxes. Please note: clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and ready for pickup in 2-3 weeks.

Dates: July 18-21

Times: 9am-12pm

Cost: $160 includes all materials and kiln firings.

Week 5: Claymation Animation (July 25-28)

Animate your own clay creations in a short film.

We’ll create a short movie that will be shown at Lars HOckstad on the big screen during the 2016 Traverse City Film Festival! In this special film camp, you’ll design and bring your three-dimensional claymation characters to life. Learn how animators create movement using traditional stop-motion animation and a camera to shoot your own claymation movies. Fundamentals such as design and animation basics are covered. We’ll design a story board and characters sculpted in clay using traditional techniques. Record your action frame by frame to make up your own animation sequences.

We’re offering our popular Claymation Animation camp again in partnership with the Traverse City Film Festival. We’ve added a longer camp for younger children, too! Please make sure you select the correct program for your child. The intro to Claymation Animation (four hours over two days) is held at the Traverse City Film Festival Film School and the TCFF will open registraton for it on July 10 for Friends and July 16 for the general public.

Workshop Intensive @ Stand APart Arts studio for ages 7-11 years and 12-17 years.

Week 6: CSI: Art Thief!

An art robbery has occurred and WE are the super sleuths who will crack the code. Stand APart Arts will be transformed into a crime scene, complete with evidence bags and police tape. Studetns use science AND art to uncover clues about their disapperance and use a few famous art heists as inspiration for our own art work. Analyze ransom notes using chromatography, test for fingerprints on a treasured piece of art, and see what goes into creating a true masterpiece. Students will sculpt, paint, and private-eye their way to the thief.

We all have our favorite superheroes and comic characters! Here, we’ll learn how to develop characters and uncover unique ways to draw them for big impact. After working with a variety of art tools (pen and ink, watercolor, illustration markers), we’ll make handbound books for our comics and design artist trading cards. We’ll sculpt our own 3-D character out of clay and learn to draw comics that POP off the page! Please note: clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and ready for pickup in 2-3 weeks.
